6 Books You Need To Pick Up This Week

January is starting off on a good note with all of these beautiful releases. This week we have a nice mixture of memoirs, historical narratives, and of course, fantasy. The books below will be released today and all should have a place in your TBR pile for the upcoming months. Here at Maude’s Book Club we really love supporting female authors and stories, and there are some good ones on this list!

Here are the 6 books you need to pick up this week!

Good for a Girl book cover

Good For a Girl: A Woman Running in a Man’s World by Lauren Fleshman

Synopsis: Lauren Fleshman has grown up in the world of running. One of the most decorated collegiate athletes of all time and a national champion as a pro, she was a major face of women’s running for Nike before leaving to shake up the industry with feminist running brand Oiselle and now she coaches elite young female runners.

A woman pushing herself to her limit and creating her own personal brand can be inspiring. Fleshman’s journey is a powerful one, as readers can go through everything with her and understand her process. She has done the whole circuit and is proud of what she has accomplished. One of the best books this week.

Spare book cover

Spare by Prince Harry

Synopsis: With Prince Harry’s raw unflinching honesty, Spare is a landmark publication full of insight, revelation, self-examination, and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief.

Prince Harry has been in the spotlight for a couple of years now and has always been the black sheep of the family. He finally pours his heart out into this memoir and it’s a very interesting read. It dates back to his early years as a royal and he expresses some family stories that probably wouldn’t have seen the light of day if he hadn’t written them down. The more we read, the more we understand the monarchy and why Prince Harry chose to live his life differently.

All the Dangerous Things book cover

All the Dangerous Things by Stacy Willingham

Synopsis: One year ago, Isabelle Drake’s life changed forever: her toddler son, Mason, was taken out of his crib in the middle of the night while she and her husband were asleep in the next room. With little evidence and few leads for the police to chase, the case quickly went cold. However, Isabelle will not rest until Mason returns to her.

For parents who are avid readers, this thriller will definitely hit differently. What would you do if your child went missing? Stacy Willingham goes through everything possible with Isabelle Drake and tries to get her child back. She goes to the ends of the Earth, and hopefully, it is enough.

Hell Bent book cover

Hell Bent by Leigh Bardugo

Synopsis: Find a gateway to the underworld. Steal a soul out of hell. A simple plan, except people who make this particular journey rarely come back. But Galaxy “Alex” Stern is determined to break Darlington out of purgatory — even if it costs her a future at Lethe and at Yale.

Exploring the underworld is always imaginative and fun. And for such a talented writer like Leigh Bardugo to dive into this world is definitely something to pick up. Following Stern into the pits of purgatory to break someone out is a fantastical ride filled with plenty of obstacles and symbolic meanings.

The Nazi Conspiracy book cover

The Nazi Conspiracy by Brad Meltzer and Josh Mensch

Synopsis: A true story filled with daring rescues, body doubles, and political intrigue, this book details FDR’s pivotal meeting in Tehran and the deadly Nazi plan against the heads of state of the three major Allied powers who attended it.

If you’re looking for something in non-fiction, then this book is just for you. Sometimes the past is fascinating because of what actually happened between those in power. Meltzer and Mensch go through years’ worth of paperwork just to uncover some chilling secrets.

Lunar Love book cover

Lunar Love by Lauren Kung Jessen

Synopsis: Oliver Huang Christenson is excited-slash-terrified to take over her grandmother’s matchmaking business. But when she learns that a new dating app has made her Pó Po’s traditional Chinese zodiac approach all about “animal attraction”, her emotions skew more toward furious-slash-outraged. Especially when L.A.’s most-eligible bachelor Bennett O’Brien is behind the app that could destroy her family’s legacy.

First and foremost, it’s always amazing to see diversity in literature. It’s refreshing to have so many women of colour writing from their perspectives to show different narratives. Dating apps are exhausting and matchmaking is old-fashioned, but Jessen combines the two with an astrological approach as well. This is a lighthearted novel that will hopefully put a smile on your face.

All these books sound amazing and should definitely be added to your reading pile!
