Brews and Books: What To Pair With the Best Autumn Books

The crisp fall air is making everyone happy! Well, at least for those who LIVE for autumn. There is a different feeling in the air once October hits and everyone has their fall traditions. If one of them is picking up a Starbucks and reading a book in the cafe or at home, then you’re doing October right.

The books on this list are paired with the autumn brews at Starbucks. Some are new, and some are classics that everyone should read at least once. Each brew is paired based on what happens in each novel, so keep this list handy.

Here are the five autumn novels we recommend and their autumn brew pairing!

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte

Lockwood initially reveals his decision to move to Wuthering Heights as stemming from his desire to escape society. After a series of unfortunate events, including a ghostly visitation, Lockwood asks Nelly about Heathcliff and Wuthering Heights.

Nelly then recounts what transpired in Wuthering Heights between the Lintons, Earnshaws, and the Heathcliffs, including how Mr. and Mrs. Earnshaw adopted the foundling Heathcliff. As Nelly’s storytelling progresses, she reveals the complicated relationship between Heathcliff and his step-siblings, Hindley and Catherine Earnshaw. After listening to Nelly’s tale of his landlord’s turbulent past, Lockwood eventually grows weary of the moors and ‘returns’ to society.

Brew Pairing: Iced Apple Crisp Oatmilk Shaken Espresso.

  • The new with the old, a balance of past stories in Wuthering Heights with new experiences for Lockwood. When reading the book this brew is paired nicely with the crisp atmosphere Bronte describes at Wuthering Heights.

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

After receiving a frantic letter from her newlywed cousin begging for someone to save her from a mysterious doom, Noemi Taboada heads to High Place, a distant house in the Mexican countryside. She’s not sure what she will find - her cousin’s husband, a handsome Englishman, is a stranger, and Noemi knows little about the region.

Noemi is also an unlikely rescuer: She’s a glamorous debutant, and her chic gowns and perfect red lipstick are more suited for cocktail parties than amateur sleuthing. But she’s also tough and smart, with an indomitable will, and she is not afraid: Not of her cousin’s new husband, who is both menacing and alluring; not of his father, the ancient patriarch who seems to be fascinated by Noemi and not even the house itself, which begins to invade Noemi’s dreams with visions of blood and doom.

Brew Pairing: Apple Crisp Oatmilk Macchiato

  • Light apple flavour with a hidden kick of espresso that will come when you least expect it.

  • The house comes alive when Noemi isn’t paying attention, the ghosts come out to haunt her.

Dracula by Bram Stoker

When Jonathan Harker visits Transylvania to help Count Dracula with the purchase of a London house, he makes a series of horrific discoveries about his client. Soon afterwards, various bizarre incidents unfold in England: an apparently unmanned ship is wrecked off the coast of Whitby; a young woman discovers strange puncture marks on her neck; and the inmate of a lunatic asylum raves about the ‘Master’ and his imminent arrival.

Brew Pairing: Pumpkin Spice Latte

  • the original autumn brew with the original vampire story.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazement. It is called Le Cirque des Reves, and it is only open at night.

But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway — a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will.

Brew Pairing: Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew

  • It is Halloween in a cup. The pure taste of pumpkin brings out the magic which is paired nicely with the fantastical world Morgenstern creates for her characters.

Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier

“Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again…”

Ancient, beautiful Manderley, between the rose garden and the sea, is the county’s showpiece. Rebecca made it so — even a year after her death, Rebecca’s influence still rules there. How can Maxim de Winter’s shy new bride ever fill her place or escape her vital shadow?

A shadow that grows longer and darker as the brief summer fades, until, in a moment of climatic revelations, it threatens to eclipse Manderley and its inhabitants completely…

Brew Pairing: Iced Pumpkin Cream Chai Tea Latte

  • A more sophisticated and layered pumpkin brew that compliments the twisted story of Rebecca.
