If You Like ‘Mean Girls’ Add These To Your TBR

After almost a decade, Tina Fey’s Mean Girls has become a pop culture staple and a classic coming-of-age film. Fey has always wanted to do more with Mean Girls, so she turned to Broadway in 2017. Unfortunately, the new film, starring Renee Rapp, who played Regina George on Broadway, has not been marketed as a musical by Paramount. Many people think it’s a remake, but it’s not, so there’s no reason to be upset!

Tina Fey adapted Queen Bees and Wannabees by Rosalind Wiseman for the original script. The parenting and adolescent self-help book breaks down the cliques in high school and how damaging the notion of popularity can be. Girls go through so much in “Girl World,” and Fey was able to highlight all of that in Mean Girls. Everyone felt seen in that film, and that’s why it will always hold its place in the zeitgeist.

Queen Bees and Wannabees by Rosalind Wiseman

Synopsis:

Do you feel as though your adolescent daughter exists in a different world, speaking a different language and living by different laws? She does.

This groundbreaking book takes you inside the secret world of girls’ friendships, translating and decoding them, so parents can better understand and help their daughters navigate through these crucial years. Rosalind Wiseman has spent more than a decade listening to thousands of girls talk about the powerful role cliques play in shaping what they wear and say, how they feel about school, how they respond to boys, and how they feel about themselves.

If you’ve read Queen Bees and Wannabees by Rosalind Wiseman or have watched Mean Girls, here are the five books we recommend!

Pretty Things by Janelle Brown

Synopsis:

Two wildly different women--one a grifter, the other an heiress--are brought together by the scam of a lifetime in a page-turner from the New York Times bestselling author of Watch Me Disappear.

Nina once bought into the idea that her fancy liberal arts degree would lead to a fulfilling career. When that dream crashed, she turned to stealing from rich kids in L.A. alongside her wily Irish boyfriend, Lachlan. Nina learned from the best: Her mother was the original con artist, hustling to give her daughter a decent childhood despite their wayward life. But when her mom gets sick, Nina puts everything on the line to help her, even if it means running her most audacious, dangerous scam yet.

Vanessa is a privileged young heiress who wants to make her mark in the world. Instead, she becomes an Instagram influencer--travelling the globe, receiving free clothes and products, and posing for pictures in exotic locales. But behind the covetable façade is a life marked by tragedy. After a broken engagement, Vanessa retreats to her family's sprawling mountain estate, Stonehaven: A mansion of dark secrets not just from Vanessa's past, but from that of a lost and troubled girl named Nina.

The Favourite Sister by Jessica Knoll

Synopsis:

From the author of the bestselling debut novel of 2015, Luckiest Girl Alive, comes Jessica Knoll's new thriller, featuring a pair of competitive and uber-successful sisters whose secrets and lies result in murder.

When five hyper-successful, beautiful, and hugely competitive women agree to appear on a new TV show set in New York City called "Goal Diggers,” executives expect a season filled with petty grievances, vicious social media attacks, and outrageous posturing that makes these shows catnip to the viewing public. But they can't anticipate the second season of "Goal Diggers" will feature murder.

Structured as a series of episodes, Jessica Knoll's second novel again delivers a deliciously scathing expose and the same hair-raising plot twists readers loved in Luckiest Girl Alive.
