The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty was first published on May 1st, 1971. Then, the novel was adapted by director William Friedkin in 1973. Peter Blatty also wrote the screenplay for that film. In the 70s, the book and the film were seen as controversial.

According to the British Board of Film Classification, “There were reports of incidents of hysteria involving young women, which had led to concerns that the film might cause severe emotional problems, particularly among those who believed in the reality of demonic possession.”

When the novel was released William Peter Blatty went through a similar issue. His book was actually banned because the depiction of demonic possession and exorcism was deemed to be blasphemous and disturbing for some readers.

For years, the film and the novel have been highly regarded as the best of the horror genre. The people who were old enough to read the book and watch the film still talk about the frenzy in the 70s. Everyone was traumatized by The Exorcist.

The film and the book paved the way for horror writers to tell their stories and spook many new audiences for generations. The newest addition to The Exorcist world is The Exorcist: Believer. A film meant to reintroduce new audiences to the work of William Peter Blatty and William Friedkin.
