About The Author

Brandon Sanderson was born in December 1975 in Lincoln, Nebraska. Throughout elementary school, he lost interest in the types of titles often suggested to him. He really enjoyed epic fantasy, so much that he even tried his hand at writing some. in 1994 Sanderson enrolled at Brigham Young University as a biochemistry major.

Afterwards, he took time away from his studies to serve as a missionary as well. He did return to school and became an English major instead. He began writing his stories and managed to finish seven novels during his undergraduate years. It was in 2003, while he was in his graduate program, that he got a call from his editor that his first novel Elantris would be published.

Maude’s Book Chat ‘Mistborn The Well of Ascension’ Part 1

Talking Points

  • (27:25) First impressions of the second book in the series, Sharxboy said in the chat, “It feels like a YA series with R-rated violence, but a G-rated *painful* romance…” Maude thinks that is a great way to look at the book.

  • (1:05:25) Maude was thinking about the fact that Vin didn’t break when her brother died. And that there’s a lot to unpack and it does get convoluted.

  • (1:30:36) Maude compares the game of mafia to the situation, the characters in the book are trying to see who they can trust. The spy in the book is making it so much harder for Elend. Then everyone says in the chat, everything that happens in the book could have been fixed by good communication.

Maude’s Book Chat ‘Mistborn The Well of Ascension’ Part 2

Talking Points

  • (22:00) Kate rated this book out of 4 because the pacing was uneven but it was still good, it’s kind of a double-edged sword. She compares the second half to the first half, saying the second half is really busy, whereas the first half is leisurely.

  • (49:00) Vaidin was content with the character development for Elend and then Maude went into the fact that people can relate to growing out of relationships from high school.

  • (1:02:00) Kate said that Elend put Vin on a pedestal as his salvation and she didn’t fit that perfect mould that he made out of her. He couldn’t bare that she betrayed him in that regard, just by existing in a way that he didn’t deem the correct way.
