‘Onyx Storm’ Map of the Isles Breakdown
We know our Fantasy readers LOVE maps.
The first half of Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros was a whirlwind of information. Some of the names being thrown around were overwhelming because some of us are visual people. Attempting to link the names to isles or even riders to dragons was difficult. However, once Yarros breaks it down in the second half, things become easier as they travel to each Isle in search of the Irids.
The world of the Empyrean series has expanded fully in Onyx Storm as it was so interesting to see what the isles have in store, more importantly what they have to offer our riders from Basgiath.
The map below may help those trying to understand the placement of the isles near Basgiath and what each has to offer.
MAP OF THE CONTINENT (Amaralis)
List of ISLES SURROUNDING the continent
Deverelli
Capitol Matyas and is ruled by King Courtlyn.
Deverelli is the Southernmost isle located across the Arctile Ocean from the Continent.
The residents do not worship gods, they are the most neutral of the isles and the best for trade.
They are mostly unarmed but carry daggers and other weapons based on rank.
Deverelli is the last of The Isles to maintain communication with Navarre. They gained the reputation of “the treacherous isle of merchants” because of how they traded information for the right price.
Unnbriel
Capitol Eistol and is ruled by Queen Marlis
Dedicated to Dunne, Goddess of War also known as the “Isle of Dunne.”
Blood is considered the ultimate offering and the gravest sin is cowardice.
They practice trial by combat to gain entrance to their court.
Trial for Queen's Audience
Before meeting the queen, visitors must undergo a ritual to prove their worth. This is the seven-step process:
The visitors request a meeting with the Queen to the Commander who greets them on the Isle.
The visitors select their strongest champions to face the Unnbrish in trial by combat.
After the selection, the Commander claps twice, summoning three bare-armed Unnbrish to battle the visitors.
A high priestess of Dunne meets the challengers in the plaza and scores the back of their forearms with a dagger, spilling blood onto the dark stones as an offering to Dunne.
The challengers negotiate and agree on a single weapon type for combat. Those in attendance collect the unused weapons from the fighters.
The Commander announces the start of the fight. Once the fight begins, they step off of the plaza.
The combat continues until one side yields or is defeated. If it’s more than one group of fighters, victory is determined by the most wins on a team.
Hedotis
Capitol Vidriys
Ruled by a triumvirate of Faris, Roslyn, and Nairi
Dedicated to Hedeon, God of Wisdom
They have built a community on knowledge and peace.
They have no army.
They thrive on intelligence and outwitting their opponent.
Hedotis has the triumvirate as the ruling body. Their rulers are chosen by election rather than birthright.
To meet with the Triumvirate, the visitor must undergo a trial to prove their wisdom.
Zehylina
Capitol Xortyrs.
Dedicated to Zihnal, God of Luck.
Riders will feel magic once they step down on Zehylina.
To gain an audience with the Queen, the visitors must accept gifts from Zihnal without complaint. It works as roulette depending on the gift chosen by each visitor. The visitors must draw a card corresponding with a gift from someone in the crowd.
Loysam
It has guards but no army
Dedicated to Loial, God of Love.
