Convincing You To Read ‘A Darker Shade of Magic’ by V.E. Schwab

V.E. Schwab

Victoria “V.E.” Schwab is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of more than twenty books, including the acclaimed Shades of Magic series, the Villains series, the Cassidy Blake series and the international bestseller The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue.

Kell was raised in Arnes - Red London - and officially serves the Maresh Empire as an ambassador, travelling between the frequent bloody regime changes in White London and the court of George III in the dullest of Londons, the one without any magic left to see.

Kell is a smuggler, unofficially servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they’ll never see. It’s a defiant hobby with dangerous consequences, which Kell now sees firsthand.

Now perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. They’ll first need to stay alive to save the world.

If you’re new to ‘Maude’s Book Club’, then you don’t know that V.E. Schwab is one of Maude Garrett’s favourite authors. Garrett has said that Schwab will always be a day one “insta-buy” because of how talented of a writer she is. In a previous book chat, the community absolutely adored reading The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue with Garrett because of her love of the author.

The Shades of Magic Series

V.E. Schwab created a world of magic with magicians having the rare ability to travel between parallel Londons; Red, Grey, White, and once upon a time, Black. As we find out in the first book, Kell was raised in Red London, but after things go awry during an exchange, Kell escapes to Grey London.

In the second book, Kell becomes restless because they gave up smuggling, but is visited by dreams of ominous magical events. While Red London is caught up in the pageantry of the Element Games, another London is coming back to life.

In the third and final book, a darkness sweeps the Maresh Empire, which was once a balance of power among the four Londons. Kell - once believed to be the last surviving Antari - begins to waver under the pressure of competing loyalties.

The trilogy has 4.5/5 stars on Goodreads and has been regarded by many as one of their favourite magical series.
