November 2022 Selection: ‘Black Sun’ by Rebecca Roanhorse

Maude flips back into a dark fantasy tale with Rebecca Roanhorse. The community chose Black Sun which has been on the polls for the past couple of months. Every month Maude chooses a new Fantasy or Sci-Fi novel with our book club. She uses Good Reads to keep everything in one space.

Synopsis:

“In the holy city of Tova, the winter solstice is usually a time for celebration and renewal, but this year it coincides with a solar ecplise, a rare celestial event proscribed by the Sun Priest as an unbalancing world. Meanwhile, a ship launches from a distant city bound for Tova and set to arrive on the solstice. The captain of the ship, Xiala, is a disgraced Teek whose song can calm the waters around her as easily as it can wrap a man’s mind.”

Maude’s Book Chat ‘Black Sun’ Part 1

Talking Points

  • (19:46) Avery Adventurous read Black Sun when it was first released and says that she really enjoyed reading this one. She was very happy to read it again. There is an actress from the Expanse who lent her voice to the audiobook. Maude isn’t a fan of one of the voice actors and can’t place which character it is.

  • (1:02:10) Maude and the community discuss the hierarchy in the novel and who would be considered the oppressor in this case. It does explore religion in a way but they do focus on the powerful and the rich.

  • (1:40:09) Maude discusses one character’s death that they tried to conceal in the book from other characters, but the readers know the truth. It is a sad way to end the middle of this discussion.

Maude’s Book Chat ‘Black Sun’ Part 2

Talking Points

  • (13:04) Maude talks about the books she wants to read with the community in 2023. People are holding everyone else accountable in the community and that’s why people are reading.

  • (1:10:08) Maude poses the question of who is inherently evil in the book, so the community jumps in and categorizes the characters. There is a morality spectrum that Maude presents to the group.

  • (1:52:19) Maude goes through her final thoughts about the Black Sun. The community discusses when to read the other two books in the series.
