October 2022 Selection: ‘Dark Places’ by Gillian Flynn
Maude wants to read something more suspenseful with the community, and who better to turn to than Gillian Flynn? The community chose Dark Places to get their spooky on in the month of October. Every month Maude chooses a new Fantasy or Sci-Fi novel with our book club. She uses Good Reads to keep everything in one space.
Synopsis:
“Libby Day was just seven years old when her evidence put her fifteen-year-old brother behind bars. Since then, she has been drifting. But when she is contacted by a group who are convinced of Ben’s innocence, Libby starts to ask questions she never dared to before. Was the voice she heard her brother’s?”

Talking Points
(10:24) Miss Neromancer discusses how traumatized Libby is in the book, and Maude does agree with her. Many of Flynn’s characters are unlikable but Libby is different.
(1:05:00) Michelle says that projection is such a driver for people’s actions and it’s not fair but it’s part of the human experience. Maude agrees that this is such an important factor in the book as well.
(1:49:21) The community comments on Libby’s scars as the trauma she carries with her. But Maude looks at it differently and says those scars are what set her apart, they make her different.
Maude’s Book Chat ‘Dark Places’ Part 2
Talking Points
(20:12) Miss Necromancer says that none of these characters are good people, they’re all messy, morally gray, screwed-up characters. She says it’s kind of an exercise of villainy instead of humanity.
(1:02:50) Catch Twenty-Two says that the character of DeAndra reminded him of his best friend’s ex-wife and that’s why he wanted to play devil’s advocate. Maude further explains DeAndra as a child of neglect and having to take on so much responsibility.
(1:41:21) Maude is talking about shows that she has watched and wants to watch at the end of the stream with the community. She recommends Interview With a Vampire.
