Maude’s Book Club Questions For ‘The Poppy War’ by R.F. Kuang
We love having discussions at MBC! We tackled The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang in March! For those who love historical fiction and extensive lore that ties in with actual events, Kuang’s war fantasy novel is unlike anything you’ll ever read.
We thought it would be nice to share the questions we have prepared for our book club with all of you. That way, if you enjoy the thought-provoking questions that come with reading a book and going into detail, you’ll join us for next month’s pick!
Maude’s Book Club Questions For ‘Divine Rivals’ by Rebecca Ross
We love having discussions at MBC! Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross stole our hearts in February. For those who love to write and those who enjoy reading historical fiction, this fantasy romance is the perfect mixture for all readers.
Maude’s Book Club became engaged with the story between Iris and Kitt because of the development of their relationship. It is enemies-to-lovers and its beautifully written passages explore one’s true self through anonymity and vulnerability.
Book Review: ‘The Poppy War’ by R.F. Kuang
Our book club pick for March was The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang. It has been known that Kuang’s novels are rich with historical and political writing that become dense for some readers. This series is the best way to get to know Kuang and her style of writing.
It feels like an entry-level into her world, and hopefully, you will appreciate how talented of a writer she is. Even if it’s not your style of fantasy, there’s an appreciation for the ambition of this type of structure for a trilogy.
The History Behind ‘The Poppy War’ by R.F. Kuang
The Poppy War became the first notable series for R.F. Kuang as she fused historical fiction with fantasy. The series follows a young girl who chooses to become a soldier rather than be forced into an arranged marriage at fourteen.
Kuang understands the political scope and military strategy in the series because of her studies in the field. Rin possesses a thirst for knowledge because, for Rin, that is the ultimate power early on.
In a way, Rin parallels Kuang’s ability to retain all this information and usefully extract pieces that become relevant at any moment.
Book of the Month Preview: ‘The Poppy War’ by R.F. Kuang
Our book choice for March is The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang. This has been on everyone’s TBR in MBC for quite some time. And we are all excited to start reading the series. The novel was a nominee for Best Fantasy in 2017 and R.F. Kuang was nominated for Best Debut Author.
Book Review: ‘Divine Rivals’ by Rebecca Ross
If you’re a fan of historical fiction and Romantasy, Divine Rivals is the perfect mixture of both. Rebecca Ross crafts a young adult novel filled with yearning and stolen words on a page between a fantastical typewriter. Not only is it an intimate love story between Iris Winnow and Roman Kitt, but there’s a war among the gods, Dacre and Enva.
Book Review: ‘The Song of Achilles’ by Madeline Miller
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller was released on September 20th, 2011 and became one of the most talked about novels by word of mouth. The queer relationship of Achilles and Patroclus won the hearts of many.
It is a reimagined origin story of the epic Trojan War. It is a devastating love story with an almighty battle between gods and kings. The characters have been changed even though their fate remains the same. Miller writes a moving story that can resonate with anyone.
