The story in each book often mirrored a situation the protagonist was going through. Whether it was grief, trauma or loneliness, the character’s pain would parallel the supernatural events.

In one of my film lectures at University, we studied The Fall of the House of Usher and watched how the short story was translated into film. Filmmakers had adapted it as early as 1928 and remade it in the 50s. There have been many iterations, but no one has done the story justice like Mike Flanagan.

In 2021 Amazon Prime released the first season of The Wheel of Time. The series is set in a high fantasy world where magic exists, but only some can access it. The series is adapted from the novels written by Robert Jordan. And after his passing, Brandon Sanderson continued the series. There are roughly 14 books in the series with other spin-offs and reference books to dive into.
Here at MBC, we have been obsessed with fantasy novels for years and The Wheel of Time is one of Maude Garrett’s favourite series on Amazon Prime!

Sir Kenneth Branagh has returned with another Agatha Christie adaptation. A Haunting in Venice is based on the novel Hallowe’en Party. Branagh enjoys his mystery thrillers after his success with Murder on the Orient Express. He wanted to draw from the genius of Christie by presenting her work to the world on the big screen. According to Branagh, this film is a sequel to Death on the Nile and will have supernatural elements similar to the book.

This year Fourth Wing took the fantasy world by storm and introduced readers to a new adventure with dragons. Rebecca Yarros personalized the dragon’s journey with its rider to create a more unique experience for readers.
Each dragon has a “signet” that can flow through its rider. So when a dragon chooses its rider, they are connected to their mind and soul, creating a powerful connection with their powers.

If you’ve been an avid gamer and have been attached to your Sony Playstation for years, Gran Turismo has been your favourite racing game to play. Even before Forza came out, there was no competition for GT. Sony made a bold choice in changing the mould of the video game adaptation to incorporate a true story for the racing game to come to life.

Maude Garrett has read Landscape with Invisible Hand by M.T. Anderson and it’s a young adult sci-fi novel that will capture the hearts of many. Now that it has been adapted for the big screen, many are able to turn to the book for more imagination and creativity.
