The Goodreads Choice Awards 2023 Opening Round Nominations
It’s almost the end of the year, and it has been a wonderful year because it has been filled with books. The Goodreads Choice Awards have begun, and their opening round is officially open for voting. They cover each genre, but here at MBC, our focus is fantasy and science fiction. Fortunately, those genres flourished this year because of some incredible new releases.

Welcome To Noirvember: 10 Noir Novels to Add to Your TBR
Much like Spooktober, Noirvember is the month to spend consuming as much as you can from the Noir genre. Noir is a subgenre of crime fiction and can be considered, but there is so much more that comes with it.
Noir fiction, by definition, has a marked darkness in its themes and subject matter. It features a disturbing mix of sex and violence. There is often a femme fatale and a detective (or a pseudo-detective) trying to solve a murder or disappearance. If you like to read a darker, more sinister crime thriller that doesn’t fall into horror, then Noir is the genre for you.

10 Feel-Good Books To Add To Your Winter TBR
The season of autumn does come with its perks. The leaves are changing colour, there’s a cozy wardrobe, and possibly the best warm drinks. However, it also comes with a change in mental health with seasonal depression hitting people when they least expect it. We wake up and come home in pure darkness and that can take a toll on everyone.
At MBC we want to create a safe space and support everyone through whatever they may be going through. We do have a #support channel in the discord where everyone can express themselves freely.
The books listed below are all feel-good novels that are considered cozy reads for the month of November and December. Some have the stamp of approval from the MBC community as well.

If You Like ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ Add These To Your TBR
Killers of the Flower Moon is shocking, but a necessary read because it breaks down the corrupt system that has been cycled since the 1920s. Scorsese’s faithful adaptation as a mainstream filmmaker is important, so audiences can understand that the system is still broken. It’s a heartbreaking and authentic retelling of this American tragedy that will resonate with many.

If You Like ‘Goosebumps’ by R. L. Stine Add These Adult Books To Your TBR!
Since the 90s, Goosebumps by R. L. Stine introduced pre-teens to the supernatural and fantastical. Thanks to Stine, his stories were the perfect balance of horror and thriller. The story in each book often mirrored a situation the protagonist was going through. Whether it was grief, trauma or loneliness, the character’s pain would parallel the supernatural events.

If You Like ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ Add These Books To Your TBR!
If you’re a fan of Edgar Allan Poe then you know about The Fall of the House of Usher. It is one of his most well-known short stories. In one of my film lectures at University, we studied The Fall of the House of Usher and watched how the short story was translated into film. Filmmakers had adapted it as early as 1928 and remade it in the 50s. There have been many iterations, but no one has done the story justice like Mike Flanagan.

Brews and Books: What To Pair With the Best Autumn Books
The crisp fall air is making everyone happy! Well, at least for those who LIVE for autumn. There is a different feeling in the air once October hits and everyone has their fall traditions. If one of them is picking up a Starbucks and reading a book in the cafe or at home, then you’re doing October right.
The books on this list are paired with the autumn brews at Starbucks. Some are new, and some are classics that everyone should read at least once. Each brew is paired based on what happens in each novel, so keep this list handy.

If You Like ‘Pet Sematary’ Add These To Your TBR!
MBC is currently reading Fairy Tale by Stephen King for book club! The month of October is meant for something spooky, and Stephen King always delivers. His books have been adapted numerous times; some adaptations are good, and some are bad. His book Pet Sematary, which is deemed one of his best has been adapted once again for Paramount Plus.

If You Like ‘The Exorcist’ Add These To Your TBR!
For years, the film and the novel have been highly regarded as the best of the horror genre. The people who were old enough to read the book and watch the film still talk about the frenzy in the 70s. Everyone was traumatized by The Exorcist.
The film and the book paved the way for horror writers to tell their stories and spook many new audiences for generations. The newest addition to The Exorcist world is The Exorcist: Believer. A film meant to reintroduce new audiences to the work of William Peter Blatty and William Friedkin.

If You Like ‘Fourth Wing’ You Should Add These To Your TBR!
Maude’s Book Club wrapped up Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros, and the entire community LOVED reading it together. Yes, it’s a bit spicy, but it is a Romantasy novel that everyone can enjoy. Who doesn’t love dragons, special powers, and enemies-to-lovers?
Here at MBC, we love our fantasy books! So we had to read one of the biggest fantasy books of 2023!
